With more than 41,000 students, the University of Michigan is virtually a city unto itself and a pervasive influence in Ann Arbor. The university is the economic engine that drives the town, providing roughly one job for every three Ann Arbor adults.

The university hosts a wide range of cultural events, featuring local and visiting artists, musicians, writers, and public figures, and most events are open to the public (see the Entertainment section of this guide). The U-M’s many museums and libraries, also accessible to outsiders, further enrich the city’s cultural life (see the Libraries, Museums, & Galleries section of this guide).

Tours are conducted throughout the year from the Huetwell Visitors Center in the Student Activities Bldg., 515 E. Jefferson (at Maynard). Call 647–5692 for hours. Small-group information sessions are hosted during the week and on select Saturdays by the undergraduate admissions office. For information and reservations, call 647–5692 or go to www.admissions.umich.edu/visiting. Register two weeks in advance. For a self-guided tour, pick up a brochure at the Huetwell Visitors Center.

Enrollment

The U-M has 19 schools and colleges, 12 of which offer undergraduate degree programs. For information or application materials, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 1220 Student Activities Bldg., 764–7433, www.admissions.umich.edu. The application fee is $40–$75. There were 29,794 applicants for about 5,700 openings in the freshman class of 2008–2009. To enroll for a graduate degree in the liberal arts, contact the Horace H. Rackham Graduate School, 915 E. Washington, 764–8129, www.rackham.umich.edu. Professional schools such as business, engineering, law, and medicine handle their own admissions and should be contacted directly; get their numbers through the university operator at 764–1817 or from www.umich.edu.

For information on attending undergraduate classes without enrolling, call the undergraduate admissions office, 764–7433, or go to www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/guest-nondegree. For the fall or winter term, prospective visiting students interested in classes at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LS&A) should request a “nondegree” application. For the spring or summer terms, they should request a “guest” application. Visiting students should apply to the undergraduate admissions office at least two weeks before the first day of class.

Course catalogs for schools and colleges are available on the web; go to www.umich.edu and click on “LS&A course guide” or “other course guides.” A complete schedule of all U-M classes is on the web at www.umich.edu/~regoff/timesched.

Tuition & Fees

Tuition and fees for first-year undergraduates in LS&A for 2008–2009 are $11,037 for Michigan residents and $33,069 for nonresidents. Tuition varies with program and class status. Call the registrar at 615–1572 for more information. Call 764–1400 for questions regarding residency. For graduate program tuition and fees, contact individual programs or schools. Nondegree students should contact the offices of their individual programs directly. Nondegree classes are available at half cost to people age 65 & older. For more information, visit www.umich.edu/~regoff.

Employment

The U-M employs more than 36,000 people on the Ann Arbor campus and Health System. Job openings are listed online at umjobs.org and are updated daily. Prospective employees may apply for jobs online. The U-M’s Recruiting and Employment Services office has more information (615–2000; www.hr.umich.edu/empserv).
