U-M Libraries


One of the largest university library systems in the United States, the University of Michigan Library holds a vast collection of print volumes, electronic resources, rare books, maps, CDs, DVDs, and many other materials. It also offers technological and multimedia facilities and expertise to support the instruction, research and service activities of the University and the community. The collections and buildings are open to the general public, but a user's pass ($250/year, $125 for alums) is required to check out materials. The library's catalog is online at mirlyn.lib.umich.edu

Art, Architecture & Engineering Library

The library's engineering holdings are among the largest and richest technology collections in the country. Its art resources include a large image collection, architectural drawings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts. lib.umich.edu/aael


Bentley Historical Library

Founded in 1935, Bentley possesses a statewide collection of Michigan’s history and serves as the official archives of the University of Michigan. The library holds more than 65,000 printed volumes, 1.5 million photographs, more then 10,000 maps of the state and localities, 65,000 cubic feet of archival and manuscript material, and over 6 terabytes of digital material, including an extensive Civil War collection. bentley.ref@umich.edu, bentley.umich.edu


Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library

Archival collections of Gerald Ford's presidential, vice presidential, and congressional papers, including his Warren Commission files. Visitors can browse lobby exhibits, see a re-creation of President Ford's office, and attend special events. Researchers welcome. Group tours may be arranged in advance. Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library

With 3.25 million titles in several hundred languages, Hatcher is the U-M’s primary research collection for the humanities and social sciences. Hatcher also houses several specialized libraries and collections, including the Asia Library, Papyrology Collection, Special Collections Library, and Clark Library for Maps, Government Information, and Data Services. lib.umich.edu/hatcher-graduate-library


Music Library

Shapiro Library

The Shapiro Library building is home to the Shapiro Undergraduate Library (UGL, or, informally, the "UGLi"). Along with research and technology equipment and consultation services for students, the UGL provides access to books, periodicals, electronic resources, and a collection of leisure reading materials. lib.umich.edu/shapiro-undergraduate-library The building's upper floors house the Shapiro Science Library and the Askwith Media Library (764-5360).


Taubman Health Sciences Library

William L. Clements Library

World-famous collection of historical material pertaining to American history and culture from 1492 to 1950, including rare books, manuscripts, prints, maps, music, and photographs, available for historical research. Regular exhibits open to the public; tours available by appointment.
