Dec. 2-5. A different new play by a local playwright each night.

Dec. 2: Miracles in the Fall, Chuck O’Connor’s drama, set in 1968 Detroit, about a Dominican sister whose desire for holiness is challenged by the indignity of her increasingly infirm father, the confidence of a maverick priest’s intimacy, and the self-crippling family secret revealed with the untimely return of her prodigal brother.

Dec. 3: Merit, Lenelle Moise’s 2-act comic drama about race, isolation, academia, and sex that won Southern Rep’s 2012 Ruby Prize for a new play by a woman of color. It’s the story of the relationship between precocious and passionate fiction writer, the only student of color (and Southerner) in her prestigious graduate program, and her distinguished professor, a demanding divorcee with fatigued sex appeal.

Dec. 4: County Line, David Wells’ comic drama, set in rural Kansas, about a young woman, abandoned by her mother, who at age 17 is sent to a foster parent who runs a truck stop when her lovable but irresponsible father is sent to state prison.

Dec. 5: Road Through Heaven, Ricky Martinez’s magical realist coming-of-age drama, set on an island in the Caribbean, about an orphan caught up in a lovers’ triangle that explores the responsibilities of friendship, the determination to will dreams into realities, and the poetry of life and death.
