Many organizations have multi-lingual staff who could serve as interpreters – with the proper training. University of Michigan Health Services (UMHS) Interpreter Services offers a course – Medical Terminology & Body Systems – to teach your staff the skills they need to interpret competently. Mastering complex medical terms can be hard. Our Medical Terminology and Body Systems course makes it easier. This course is open to everyone, and the materials and instructions are presented in English only.This 40 hour course teaches the Word-Building technique – a quick and easy way to learn challenging terminology. The class also teaches basic medical knowledge, preparing interpreters to work in healthcare settings and pass medical interpreter certification exams. The class will read several chapters of the book, "Psychology: Briefer Course", which is James’ own distillation of his masterpiece. The discussion will concentrate mainly on how we operate mentally in the world and what it might mean, and less on wiring. Please read “The Stream of Consciousness” chapter for the first class. "Psychiatric Disorders in Chemically Dependent Individuals: Diagnostic and Treatment Considerations" will be presented by Patrick Gibbons, LMSW, DO; Adjunct Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan; Medical Director of the WCHO Community Crisis Response Team; consultant with Pain Management Solutions in Ann Arbor; and Medical Director of Dawn Farm. This program will provide an overview of co-occurring addiction and psychiatric illness, including diagnostic criteria; individual considerations for determining the appropriate course of treatment; available psycho-social and pharmacologic treatment interventions; and the perspectives of both the person with addiction and the treatment provider on addiction and psychiatric illness. Tricksters are archetypal figures who appear in the myths of many different cultures. They are mischief-makers, boundary-crossers, but often also benefactors. This study group will read selected trickster tales from around the world and look at how tricksters are with us in our own culture in figures as diverse as Tom Sawyer, Ferris Bueller, and Captain Jack Sparrow.
