This fundraiser offers an old-timey, laid-back concert with the feel of a country fair. Headliner is the Australian-born country singer-songwriter Jamie O�Neal who�s best known for her number one singles �There Is No Arizona� and �When I Think About Angels,� both released in 2000. Opening act is the Indiana country band the Dave Caley Band.

More than 40 Ann Arbor and Detroit-area artists showcase their works-in-progress, including dancers, playwrights, metal smiths, installation artists, painters, musicians, and more. The audience can explore the gallery space and talk to the artists about their creative process.

Sept. 14: A benefit reception celebrating the 1st public show of Creative Rights, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing free legal services, educational programs, and coordination of professional support services to the creative community. With a string quartet, a live jazz band, and a variety of other performances. Cocktail attire.

Glen Hansard: The Ark.

Solo performance by this acoustic alt-pop-folk Irish singer-songwriter best known for his work in the Frames and the Swell Season. Allmusic.com reviewer James Christopher Monger calls his recent solo debut, Rhythm and Repose, a collection of �soulful, slow burn ballads that ache like the sliced-open underbelly of a terminally swollen rain cloud,� adding that �Hansard�s wounded Cat Stevens-esque cadence serves as an excellent bad news delivery system.� Opening act is Iron and Wine, the stage name of Samuel Beam, an Austin-based folk-rock singer-songwriter whose music has been featured in several movie and TV soundtracks. He�s known for meticulously crafted story songs driven by a mix of forlorn love and religious yearnings and set to layered, polyrhythmic sonic collages.

The Second City: The Ark.

Sept. 14 & 15. One of the longest-running comedy improv groups in the country, Chicago�s popular Second City troupe lampoons contemporary political, cultural, and social events in an evening of short sketches. The sketches are developed and refined nightly in improv sessions held after the regular show, when the actors take suggestions from the audience.

�Anything Goes�: Ann Arbor Civic Theatre.

Sept. 13-16. Andy Ballnik directs local actors in Cole Porter's delightful Depression-era musical about romantic liaisons among the passengers on an ocean liner bound from New York to England. The score contains many of Porter's best-known and most lyrically erudite songs, including "I Get a Kick out of You," "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," "You're the Top," and the title song. Stars Sarah Brown, Patrick Ballnik, and Meredith Deighton.

�Ode to Joy�: Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.

See review. Ari Lipsky conducts the orchestra in Beethoven�s beloved 9th Symphony, a work that plumbs the depths of musical expressiveness. The rapturous choral finale features the lively 90-member local men�s chorus Measure for Measure, the Livingston County Chorale, bass Stephen West, tenor Tim Culver, alto Melody Racine, and soprano Laura Aikin. The program also includes Beethoven�s dramatic vocal tour de force Ah, Perfido! as well as his Contradances for Orchestra.
