Swim to the Moon: Epic Races.

What is �Swim to the Moon�? A 10k and 5k open-water swim through the Hiland Chain of Lakes near Hell, Michigan. The 10k race starts at Halfmoon
Lake Beach and participants will swim to the start of the 5k and turn around. The 5k will start at the old University of Michigan Fresh Air Camp on the west shore of Patterson Lake, site of soon-to-be North Star Reach, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. The 5k will swim south and east through the heavily forested Pinckney Recreation Area, passing through five lakes along the way. Scattered cottages are the only signs of civilization. All races will finish at the State beach on the east shore of Halfmoon Lake.

Guided Tours: Waterloo Area Farm Museum.

Every Fri.-Sun., June 1-Sept. 2. Costumed guides lead tours of the 10-room artifact-filled farmhouse and its outbuildings, including a recently refurbished blacksmith�s workshop. Also, on June 2 & 3 only, �Wetplates at Waterloo,� demonstrations by Wayne photographer Greg Schultz who uses a Victorian-era camera to photograph costumed volunteers and develops the photos on site using the wet plate process. Note: the wet plate process requires fair weather. Demonstrations canceled if weather is inclement.

June 17: �Fishing with Dad� (1-3 p.m.). Kids invited to meet at the park�s Rapids View Area to go fishing with their dads. License required for those 18 & over.

June 23: "Amazing Amphibians� (11 a.m.). Display and discussion of live specimens of frogs, toads, and salamanders, followed by a hike to a pond to look for amphibians in their natural habitat.

July 7 (7:30 a.m.): �Bird Hike.� Bring binoculars and a field guide.

July 14 (11 a.m.): �Kids Insect Hunt.� All kids age 2-10 invited to look for and learn about some of the insects that inhabit Hudson Mills.

July 15 (1-3 p.m.): �Fishing Fun.� All kids invited to try fishing.

July 28 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.): �A Dog Day of Summer.� All invited to bring their dog for training clinics, herding demos, doggie contests, tips from local vets, and more. $2 (dogs free).

Aug. 11 (7:45 a.m.): �Huron River Clean-Up.� All invited to help clean up the Huron River by canoe. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Lunch provided. FREE. Aug. 12 (1 p.m.): �Kids in the Creek .� All kids invited to collect and observe some of the large and small inhabitants of the Huron River ecosystem. Wear boots and be prepared to get your feet wet.

U-M Exhibit Museum Planetarium.

Daily (except July 4) beginning July 1. Five different audiovisual planetarium shows.

The Sky Tonight (11:30 a.m. Sat., 1:30 & 3:30 p.m. Sat. & Sun., and 11:30 & 3:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.) is an exploration of the current night sky.

The Little Star That Could (12:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.) is about an average yellow star on a search for a planet of its own to warm who meets other stars on the way and learns about the Solar System.

Larry Cat in Space (12:30 p.m. Sat.) is a playful cartoon about an inquisitive cat that learns more than it wanted to know about life in space when it stows away on a shuttle to be with its owner, a scientist on her way to the Moon.

Sun, Earth, and Moon (2:30 p.m. Sat. in July) explores the reasons the constellations in the night sky change throughout the year and the moon changes its phase and place in the sky. MarsQuest (2:30 p.m. Sat. in Aug.), narrated by Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, is about the history of the Red Planet and the reasons for our interest in it.

Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope (2:30 Sun. in July) explores how telescopes work and what they can do. Light Years from Andromeda (2:30 Sun. in Aug.) is an audiovisual show narrated by Star Trek actor Michael Dorn that shows the changes that occurred on Earth during the 2.8 million years it took a light beam to travel from Andromeda.

�Children of Paradise�: Michigan Theater Foundation Summer Classic Film Series.

Aug. 12 & 14. (Marcel Carne, 1945). In the Parisian theater world of the 1820s, a beautiful courtesan is loved by a boulevardier, a thief, a mime, and an aristocrat. Richard III: Michigan Shakespeare Festival.

Richard III. This is the perfect play for a year about politics. Richard, the youngest son of the house of York, uses any means necessary to gain the English throne, and what is so remarkable is that he gets the audience on his side. He is ruthless, but admirable is using every political and treacherous trick in the book. If you ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes in politics, this is the play for you. We are setting this in the 15th Century, and there will be plenty of dramatic combat!
