This New England-bred, Nashville-based singer-songwriter is known for a riveting vocal style that’s halfway between Bob Dylan’s howling wind and John Prine’s weathered breeze, and for his deft, haunting, blues-steeped ballads and story songs, graced with a dark, almost Faulknerian humor. “Any time anyone asks me who my favorite music writers are,” the late Townes Van Zandt once said, “I say Mozart, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bob Dylan, and Dave Olney. Dave Olney is one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard--and I mean that from my heart.” He’s accompanied by his frequent songeriting collaborator, guitarist Sergio Webb. 8 p.m., The Ark, 316 S. Main. Tickets $15 in advance at Herb David Guitar Studio, the Michigan Union Ticket Office (mutotix.com), and theark.org; and at the door. To charge by phone, call 763-TKTS. [map]
