on the other hand, when jay [platt] opened his store with polar exploration books and jack london firsts plus general stock in 1975 the store was packed to the gills! and in new york where i paid to get into rare book fairs they didn't have much traffic either! so, the conclusion i reach is that there's nothing wrong in ann arbor's book trade that shopping for fresh stock and bargains won't help. if karl pohrt had kept his store [shaman drum] open, anticipating border's demise, as he often implied would happen (to one or the other or BOTH of the super-store franchises) then he could be sucking up a lot of new traffic and ann arbor would be just fine in transition, i think.
