It sounds as if it has something to do with investment banking, but Citi Trends, which opened in December in Glencoe Crossing Shopping Center on Washtenaw, calls itself “a value-priced retailer of urban apparel and accessories for the whole family.” The public relations code words appear to translate to “inexpensive clothing targeted at the African American community.” There are about 300 Citi Trends around the country now, and southeastern Michigan has a particularly high concentration.
A phone call from corporate quickly nixed a management-guided tour of the store, but the big, boxy space is pretty easy to navigate on your own. It has plenty of big and tall hip-hop T-shirts for the men, with unreadable logos in black-letter script emblazoned across the front. There’s also a magnificent wall of shapely, feather-decked Sunday-morning hats for women, along with racks of scrubs and glittery T-shirts for everyday. All Citi Trend stores, including this one, have a uniformed security guard roving the premises.
