K&C Sushiya restaurant, Ann Arbor, Michigan, September, 2010

Kildon Chon Buys Miki Campus

It's now K&C Sushiya.

Kildon Chon was a sushi chef at Miki for eight years, but, he says, "everyone who works as a chef wants to own a restaurant." And Kevin Choi, owner of Miki downtown and its more recent spinoff, Miki Campus, was happy to let the new place go: "One is enough," Choi says. "I couldn't handle two restaurants." So in April, Chon made the campus restaurant on the corner of South U and Forest his own, changing the name to K & C Sushiya (sushiya means sushi bar, and K & C refers to his initials). He also added sashimi, more choices for udon dishes and hot pots, and fun small plates that might make a good entry point for undergraduates unfamiliar with Japanese food, like the "banana hama roll" (deep fried banana and sweet potato) and Sunday morning roll (salmon and cream cheese).

The space has been a restaurant for years, anchoring the University Towers apartments above. Before Miki Campus, it was a branch of New York Pizza Depot, and before that, King of Queens, both of which also have some of their history recounted above.

K & C Sushiya, 1235 South University. 222-5250. Mon.-Thurs. 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m., Fri. 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Sat. noon-11 p.m., Sun. noon-10 p.m.    (end of article)
