The Best French Bread in Town disappeared in late June, when baker Jeff Renner underwent treatment for prostate cancer. The good news is that the disease was entirely contained, and Renner’s prognosis is excellent. For lovers of his bread, the better news is that the veteran local baker will resume deliveries of his signature baguettes to Arbor Farms and Village Corner in early October.

Post-surgery, Renner says, he talked to several people who were interested in buying the business, “but I was procrastinating, and I realized it was my gut telling me I didn’t want to sell.” So he’s returning to the kitchen, at least long enough to use up the 900 pounds of flour he bought before his diagnosis; when that runs out, he may retire. “I’ll be at least baking through this year, but half-time, just Thursday and Friday and just [selling at] Arbor Farms and Village Corner,” he says. “After that, we’ll see.”
